Massachusetts Residents Affected in Deadly Listeria Outbreak
Two Massachusetts residents have fallen ill in a deadly listeria outbreak affecting multiple states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) linked this outbreak to deli meats.
Deadly Listeria Outbreak Statistics
The bacteria in this deadly listeria outbreak have affected 28 people across 12 states, with all requiring hospitalization. Tragically, the outbreak has resulted in two fatalities: one in New Jersey and one in Illinois.
New York has the highest number of cases, with seven reported illnesses, followed by Maryland with six. The first case appeared on May 29, while the most recent case was reported on July 5.
Potential Underreporting
The CDC warns that the actual number of affected individuals might be higher, as some may have recovered without seeking medical attention. Therefore, the outbreak might also extend beyond the states with known cases. Additionally, recent cases may not have been reported yet, given the three to four weeks it typically takes to determine if an illness is part of an outbreak.
Source of Contamination
Many of those affected reported consuming deli meats sliced at deli counters. These meats, commonly liverwurst, turkey, and ham, were purchased at various stores. CDC investigators are gathering data to identify which products may have been contaminated.
Risks of Deli Products
Deli products, especially those sliced or prepared at deli counters, have a higher risk of listeria contamination. The bacteria can easily spread through deli equipment, surfaces, hands, and food.
Who is at Risk in Deadly Listeria Outbreak?
Listeria poses a significant risk to pregnant individuals, those over 65, and people with weakened immune systems due to certain medical conditions or treatments. While others can become infected, serious illness is rare.
Listeria is the third-deadliest foodborne illness in the U.S. For pregnant individuals, it can cause pregnancy loss, premature birth, or life-threatening infections in newborns.
CDC Recommendations
The CDC advises that pregnant individuals and those over 65 avoid deli meats unless reheated to 165 degrees. Additionally, they recommend thoroughly cleaning refrigerators, containers, and surfaces that may have come into contact with sliced deli meats.
Recognizing Symptoms
Listeria symptoms usually appear within two weeks of consuming contaminated food but can range from the same day to 10 weeks later. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and seizures. Those experiencing symptoms should contact their healthcare provider immediately. The CDC also requests that anyone diagnosed with listeria provide information to help identify the sources of contamination. For the latest US health news stay connected with us at Wscoverage.
